Scene: the extra coins

A small bakery, early evening. Anna is closing the till. Mr. Brown, the last customer, has just left. She counts the money and finds five extra coins.

Anna: (quietly) He paid twice. Nobody will ever know.
Tom: (without looking up) Nobody except you.
Anna: It is only a few coins.
Tom: Then it will be easy to carry them to him.

Anna sighs, takes her coat and walks out into the street. In the light of the lamp she sees Mr. Brown at the corner and calls his name.

Her conscience had been louder than the closing bell.
